Photonics Polymer
Keyword
high speed plastic optical fiber and communications system, real color display, zero-birefringent polymer, super birefringent polymer, etc.
Project
Keio Photonics Research Institute (KPRI) was established as a research support organization when Professor Yasuhiro Koike's proposed research theme was adopted as one of the 30 research projects of "Funding Program for World-Leading Innovative R&D on Science and Technology (FIRST Program)" the scheme initiated by the Cabinet Office of Japan. KPRI is positioned to conduct not only basic research in phtonics, but also to return the academic results to society, and is conducting research activities with the importance of its ties with the industry as pursing joint research with private companies. Various basic patents have been established from the research to date on plastic optical technologies so-called photonics polymers. KPRI is conducting research and development on Plastic Optical Fibers such as Error-Free POF and Photonics Polymer materials for High-definition displays as two core topics making use of each knowledge in collaboration with the industry-government-academia.

Desired joint research
- Deployment of innovative Error-Free Plastic Optical Fiber that realizes large capacity, power-saving and low latency data transmission for large-scale data centers, medical devices, and in-vehicles.
- Establishment of industrialization technology for the novel birefringence controlled film
